The winter sun had just risen, the last of sunrise dissipating from the sky. And once more, Tobias and Executioner's Apprentice were on the track. They were going to give it their all - all the time. Taking a break from the breeder's cup work, there was still another race yet ahead; one a little bit shorter, six furlongs, on turf. They'd give t a good, solid, practice run.
Horse and rider where silhouetted in the morning light, head turned and ears pricked towards Skylark. The trainer gave them a look over and the tack a quick check, then nodded. "Let's give it our all. Run him fast to it." Skylark suggested, as App and his rider headed for the gate.
Executioner's Apprentice was used to the goings on by now. He approached the gate with a quiet, but radiating, confidence, and Tobias rode with no hint of concern, save for the taste of stomach acid in this throat. He wasn't going to handicap App, after all - the lighter the better. There was spring in the colt's step, a light in his dark eyes, and a light in his jockey's eyes. They were gonna do this, they were gonna rock that race, and then the cup, on top of that. He was zeroing in on the kill.
App didn't flinch or panic once he entered the gate, he just waited, snorting and chewing the bit. He was happy, this was what he lived for. Tobias clipped the chinstrap of his helmet on, and a moment later, a clang. And off went the pair.
Six furlongs was a sprint, but nothing App hadn't handled before - if he needed to, he could run a short a distance as four furlongs. Tobias felt him pulling right from the get go, and he gave App some of his way. They stayed in the inside quarter of the track, ready to make their move in short order. The racing style was essentially the same, but more condensed. It was necessary to get faster, sooner, and positioned right quick. Rather than staying further out and swooping in, they'd have to stay in the rail-half, and in this case, quarter, of the track. App gained speed in short order, but Tobias could feel the stamina to go along with it, and he let App have his fun. The grey colt showed no signs of fatigue, and he really shouldn't, anyways - it was only three furlongs in! At three and a half, they moved from a quarter from the rail, to nearly at the rail, and he let App fly, right then and there; this was one horse that could go barrelling down the track at full speed and still find the brain to listen to the jockey on top of him. He and Tobias were alike in many ways, and they worked well together.
App was well-balanced, speedy but collected, and focused. Tobias could imagine him passing the imaginary field of horses, one after another falling behind him, his hooves tearing up the turf and flinging it out in front of, them a sign of his speed and power.
They flew past the six furlong, and ending marker with ease. App had it in him to do more, but Tobias brought him back from the gallop t a good, working trot. The grey colt chewed on the bit eagerly, neck arched as they headed back for Skylark, who was leaning on the rail. "Good work, men." He congratulated them. "Keep up a pace like that and we'll be all set for whatever those races are going to throw at us, and we'll do well." He nodded and gave App a pet on his "bloody" shoulder, grinning to the colt. "We're proud of you, kiddo. Just watch, soon you'll be leaving the audience gasping for air."-----------------------
